What is Nikkei Nation?
June 01, 2012
With traditional Japanese American newspapers facing a bleak future, a new online news source has recently begun operation: NikkeiNation.net. Founded by Editor-in-Chief and Publisher George Toshio Johnston and Associate Publisher Susan Yokoyama, Nikkei Nation aims to provide news of interest to the many Nikkei or Japanese American communities across the United States and to the growing number of people interested in the general Japanese culture.
George Toshio Johnston, Nikkei Nation’s editor-in-chief and publisher, is a professional journalist with more than 20 years of experience in both print and online journalism. He has written a column on media for the Rafu Shimpo since 1992, and has worked for such news outlets as the Pacific Citizen, the Orange County Register and the Hollywood Reporter, where he served as senior online news editor. In addition to conceiving of and co-founding the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, he served as editor of Yolk, the Asian American pop culture magazine, and he produced the award-winning short-form documentary “Going for Honor, Going for Broke: The 442 Story.”
Associate Publisher and Marketing Chief Susan Yokoyama has more than 25 years experience in sales and marketing and public relations experience, much of it within the Los Angeles Japanese American community. In addition, she has more than 25 years of business accounting and human resources experience and has served over 15 years on fundraising boards and committees for various nonprofit entities. Recently, she accepted an Executive Adviser position to the "Konnichiwa Little Tokyo" program sponsored by the Little Tokyo Service Center (Los Angeles). This volunteer-run program brings disadvantaged youth to Little Tokyo and introduce them to the Japanese-American culture of Little Tokyo.
Nikkei Nation will be supported by a combination of subscriptions and advertising. NikkeiNation.net will be updated Monday-Friday and will take full advantage of the inherent speed, reach and potential offered by the World Wide Web.
